Joel Asaph Allen

Joel Asaph Allen, born on July nineteenth, eighteen thirty-eight, was a prominent American zoologist, mammalogist, and ornithologist whose contributions to the field of natural history are widely recognized. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the American Ornithologists' Union, serving as its first president, and laid the groundwork for future ornithological studies.

As the inaugural curator of birds and mammals at the American Museum of Natural History, Allen's influence extended beyond mere curation. He was also the first head of the museum's Department of Ornithology, where he dedicated his efforts to the study and preservation of avian species.

One of Allen's most significant contributions to zoology is known as Allen's rule. This principle articulates how the physical forms of endotherms, or warm-blooded animals, adapt to their climates. Specifically, it posits that these animals exhibit increased surface area in warmer environments to facilitate heat loss, while in colder climates, they tend to have reduced surface area to conserve heat.
