Joey Johnston

Joey Johnston, born on March third, nineteen forty-nine, in Peterborough, Ontario, is a distinguished Canadian ice hockey coach and former professional player. His journey in hockey began at a young age, participating in the 1961 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with his local youth team. Johnston's talent shone brightly during his junior hockey years with the Peterborough Petes from nineteen sixty-four to nineteen sixty-seven, ultimately catching the eye of the New York Rangers, who selected him eighth overall in the nineteen sixty-six Amateur Draft.

Johnston made his professional debut with the Omaha Knights, the Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate, before being traded to the Minnesota North Stars. He commenced his NHL career with the North Stars in nineteen sixty-eight, but it was with the California Golden Seals that he truly made his mark. From nineteen seventy-one to nineteen seventy-four, he emerged as a key player, leading the team in goals during both the nineteen seventy-two to seventy-three and nineteen seventy-three to seventy-four seasons, with twenty-seven and twenty-eight goals respectively. His exceptional performance earned him a spot in the NHL All-Star Game in nineteen seventy-three, nineteen seventy-four, and nineteen seventy-five, and he was appointed team captain in the fall of nineteen seventy-three.

However, Johnston's career faced challenges when his production dipped in the nineteen seventy-four to seventy-five season, leading to a trade to the Chicago Black Hawks in June nineteen seventy-five. Tragically, in August of that year, he suffered injuries from a car crash that sidelined him for the start of the season. Struggling to regain his scoring touch, he managed only five assists in thirty-two games, ultimately finishing the season in the minor leagues and retiring at the young age of twenty-seven.

Throughout his NHL career, Johnston accumulated eighty-five goals and one hundred six assists, totaling one hundred ninety-one points in three hundred thirty-one games, along with three hundred twenty penalty minutes. After retiring, he returned to Peterborough, where he transitioned into coaching while also working as a contractor. Notably, his brother Jim also pursued a career in professional ice hockey, playing several seasons in the International Hockey League.
