Johann Friedrich von Brandt

Johann Friedrich von Brandt, born on May twenty-fifth, eighteen hundred and two in Jüterbog, was a distinguished German-Russian naturalist whose extensive work primarily unfolded in Russia. His academic journey began at a gymnasium in Wittenberg, followed by studies at the University of Berlin, where he laid the groundwork for his multifaceted career.

In eighteen thirty-one, Brandt emigrated to Russia, where he quickly ascended to the role of director of the Zoological Museum of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. His tenure was marked by a fervent encouragement of the collection of native animals, many of which had previously been absent from the museum's exhibits. This initiative led to a significant influx of specimens from renowned expeditions led by explorers such as Severtzov, Przhevalsky, Middendorff, Schrenck, and Gustav Radde.

Brandt's contributions to ornithology are particularly noteworthy; he described several bird species collected by Russian explorers along the Pacific Coast of North America, including the Brandt's cormorant, red-legged kittiwake, and spectacled eider. His expertise extended beyond ornithology, as he was also a skilled paleontologist and entomologist, specializing in Coleoptera and Diplopoda.

Brandt's legacy is commemorated in various species named in his honor, including Brandt's bat and Brandt's hedgehog, alongside three other mammal species and the lizard Iranolacerta brandtii. He passed away in Merreküll, located in the Governorate of Estonia, leaving behind a rich scientific heritage.
