Johann Tetzel

Johann Tetzel, born in 1465, was a prominent German Dominican friar and preacher whose influence extended deeply into the religious landscape of his time. Appointed as Inquisitor for Poland and Saxony, he later rose to the esteemed position of Grand Commissioner for indulgences in Germany, a role that would define his legacy.

Known for his fervent promotion of indulgences, Tetzel granted these ecclesiastical pardons on behalf of the Catholic Church in exchange for monetary contributions. These indulgences were believed to alleviate the punishments of purgatory for sins, a practice that sparked significant controversy and debate within the Church.

His most notable endeavor involved the fundraising efforts for the construction of the new St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, a monumental project that required substantial financial backing. However, the widespread misuse of indulgences during this period ultimately played a pivotal role in prompting Martin Luther to pen his Ninety-five Theses, challenging the Church's practices and igniting the Protestant Reformation.
