Johannes de Sacrobosco

Johannes de Sacrobosco, also known as Ioannes de Sacro Bosco, was a prominent scholar and Catholic monk born around 1195. He made significant contributions to mathematics and astronomy during his tenure at the University of Paris, where he shared his knowledge with eager students.

Among his notable works, Sacrobosco authored a concise introduction to the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, which became the most widely read text on the subject for the next four centuries, as evidenced by the numerous surviving manuscript copies. His influence extended further with a widely circulated textbook that served as an essential introduction to astronomy in medieval Europe.

In his most extensive work, Sacrobosco tackled the complex issue of calculating the date of Easter. He astutely identified the flaws in the Julian calendar and proposed a solution that bore a striking resemblance to the modern Gregorian calendar, a concept that would not be realized until three centuries later.

Despite his profound impact on the fields of mathematics and astronomy, little is known about Sacrobosco's personal life and education. His year of death remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from 1236 to 1256, each lacking definitive evidence.
