Johannes Mario Simmel

Johannes Mario Simmel, born on April 7, 1924, in Vienna, was an influential Austrian writer whose works captivated readers across the globe. Growing up in both Austria and England, he initially trained as a chemical engineer and contributed to research efforts during World War II. Following the war, Simmel transitioned into the literary world, serving as a translator for the United States Office of Military Government in Germany while also publishing reviews and stories in the Vienna Welt am Abend.

In 1950, Simmel began his career as a reporter for the Munich illustrated magazine Quick, covering events in Europe and America. His prolific writing career included numerous screenplays and novels, many of which sold tens of millions of copies. The 1960s and 1970s saw several of his novels adapted into successful films, further solidifying his status as a prominent figure in literature.

Simmel's works often explored themes of fervent pacifism and the relativity of good and bad, with some novels believed to have autobiographical elements. His contributions to literature earned him numerous accolades, including the Award of Excellence from the Society of Writers of the UN. He passed away on January 1, 2009, in Lucerne, Switzerland, at the age of eighty-four, coinciding with the ninety-ninth birthday of Thomas Lieven, the protagonist of his notable work, 'It Can't Always Be Caviar.'
