John Andrew Mara

John Andrew Mara, born on July twenty-first, eighteen forty, in Toronto, was a prominent Canadian merchant, rancher, and politician who made significant contributions at both provincial and federal levels. His political career was marked by his election to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, where he served four terms. Initially representing Kootenay from eighteen seventy-one to eighteen seventy-five, he later represented Yale from eighteen seventy-five to eighteen eighty-six. During this time, Mara navigated the political landscape as an Independent, a Reform supporter, and as both a Government and Opposition supporter, a period before formal political parties emerged in provincial elections.

In addition to his legislative roles, Mara held the esteemed position of Speaker of the Legislature from January eighteen eighty-three until June eighteen eighty-six. His political journey continued federally as a Conservative, where he was acclaimed twice as a Member of Parliament for the riding of Yale.
