John Barrasso, born on July twenty-first, nineteen fifty-two, is a prominent American physician and politician who has been serving as the senior United States senator from Wyoming since two thousand seven. A dedicated member of the Republican Party, he previously held a position in the Wyoming State Senate from two thousand three until his elevation to the U.S. Senate.
Raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, Barrasso pursued higher education at Georgetown University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his medical residency at Yale University before relocating to Wyoming, where he established a successful orthopedic practice in Casper.
Barrasso's political journey began with a bid for the U.S. Senate in nineteen ninety-six, where he narrowly lost the Republican primary to Mike Enzi. His political career took off in two thousand two when he was elected to the Wyoming State Senate. Following the passing of incumbent Craig L. Thomas in two thousand seven, Barrasso was appointed to the U.S. Senate, subsequently winning the election to complete Thomas's term in two thousand eight and securing reelection in two thousand twelve.
In two thousand eighteen, he was appointed chair of the Senate Republican Conference, and he has held the title of dean of Wyoming's congressional delegation since two thousand twenty-one, following Enzi's retirement. In two thousand twenty-five, Barrasso ascended to the role of Senate majority whip, marking a significant milestone in his political career.
