John Boyd Dunlop, born on February fifth, eighteen forty, was a Scottish inventor and veterinary surgeon whose innovative spirit flourished primarily in Ireland. His expertise in crafting rubber devices led him to create the practical pneumatic tyres, initially designed for his child's tricycle. This invention would later revolutionize the cycling world.
Recognizing the potential of his invention, Dunlop developed pneumatic tyres for competitive cycling, significantly enhancing performance and safety. His entrepreneurial journey took a pivotal turn when he partnered with Harvey du Cros, the president of the Irish Cyclists' Association. Together, they formed a company to commercialize the pneumatic tyres.
In exchange for a modest cash sum and a small shareholding in the new venture, Dunlop sold his rights to the pneumatic tyres. However, he chose to withdraw from the business in eighteen ninety-six, leaving the company that would carry his name, Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company, to be established later by du Cros.
