John Canfield Spencer

John Canfield Spencer, born on January eighth, seventeen eighty-eight, was a prominent American lawyer, politician, and judge who played a significant role in the early political landscape of the United States. After graduating from Union College in eighteen oh six, he embarked on a legal career that saw him take on various roles, including master of chancery, postmaster, and attorney general.

Spencer's political career began in earnest when he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from eighteen seventeen to eighteen nineteen. He was also active in the New York State Assembly and Senate during various years between eighteen twenty and eighteen thirty-three. Notably, as an anti-Mason, he investigated the mysterious disappearance of William Morgan, an event that ignited the Anti-Masonic movement.

In eighteen forty-one, President John Tyler appointed Spencer as Secretary of War, and two years later, he transitioned to the role of Secretary of the Treasury. His tenure as Treasury Secretary was marked by significant challenges, including addressing a national deficit, managing tariffs, and formulating a plan for a Board of Exchequer. Despite his qualifications, Spencer faced setbacks when President Tyler nominated him for Associate Justice positions on the Supreme Court twice in eighteen forty-four, both of which were unsuccessful.

After resigning from his Treasury position in May eighteen forty-four, Spencer returned to Albany. His personal life saw him marry Elizabeth Scott Smith in eighteen oh nine, and together they had several children, many of whom faced tragic fates at a young age.
