John Davis Long

John Davis Long, born on October twenty-seventh, eighteen thirty-eight, in Buckfield, Maine, was a prominent American lawyer, politician, and writer. He pursued his legal education at Harvard University and eventually settled in Hingham, Massachusetts, where he became deeply involved in the Republican Party during the 1870s. His political career began to flourish when he was elected to the state legislature in eighteen seventy-four.

Long's rapid ascent in politics saw him elected as lieutenant governor in eighteen seventy-nine, followed by his election as the thirty-second governor of Massachusetts in eighteen eighty. During his three-year tenure, he advocated for modest reforms, although his time in office was marked by relative calm and stability.

After stepping down from the governorship, Long returned to private legal practice. However, in eighteen ninety-six, he was appointed Secretary of the Navy by his friend, President William McKinley. Despite his limited knowledge of naval affairs, he took on the role during a pivotal time that included the Spanish–American War, where he found himself at odds with Under-Secretary Theodore Roosevelt regarding naval expansion.

Long's tenure as Secretary of the Navy ended when Roosevelt ascended to the presidency, after which he resumed his law practice. He passed away in nineteen fifteen at his home, leaving behind a legacy that includes a lifelong journal, a historical account of the Spanish–American War, and a verse translation of Virgil's Aeneid.
