John Percy de Jongh Jr., born on November 13, 1957, is a prominent American businessman and politician known for his significant contributions to the U.S. Virgin Islands. A member of the Democratic Party, he made history by serving as the seventh governor of the United States Virgin Islands from 2007 to 2015. His journey in politics and business began after he returned to St. Thomas in 1981, following his college graduation.
De Jongh's political career took off when he ran as an independent candidate for governor in the 2002 general election, where he garnered twenty-four point four percent of the vote, finishing second to the incumbent, Charles W. Turnbull. His persistence paid off in the 2006 general election when he successfully ran as the Democratic candidate, defeating former Lieutenant Governor Kenneth Mapp in a runoff to secure the governorship.
During his tenure, De Jongh was re-elected in 2010, serving until January 5, 2015, when he reached his term limit. His administration focused on community development and economic growth, reflecting his background in commercial banking and active involvement in various business and philanthropic organizations.
