John Dickinson, born on January first, seventeen thirty-two, emerged as a pivotal figure in American history, known for his roles as a lawyer, politician, and writer. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware, he earned the title of the 'Penman of the Revolution' due to his influential writings, including the twelve Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania published in the late 1760s and 'The Liberty Song' in seventeen sixty-eight.
As a member of the First Continental Congress, Dickinson played a crucial role in drafting the 1774 Petition to the King and later contributed to the Olive Branch Petition in seventeen seventy-five during his tenure in the Second Continental Congress. Despite his efforts to negotiate with King George III, both petitions were unsuccessful. Notably, he also reworked Thomas Jefferson's language to create the final draft of the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms in seventeen seventy-five.
Although he served on the committee that crafted the Model Treaty, which aimed to establish alliances with foreign nations, Dickinson opposed independence from Great Britain. He abstained or was absent during the vote on the Declaration of Independence and chose not to sign it. Nevertheless, he authored the first draft of the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union in seventeen seventy-six and served as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War.
In addition to his political contributions, Dickinson was one of the wealthiest individuals in the British American colonies. He held the presidency of Delaware from seventeen eighty-one to seventeen eighty-three and of Pennsylvania from seventeen eighty-two to seventeen eighty-five. Following his death on February fourteenth, eighteen oh-eight, President Thomas Jefferson honored him as one of the foremost advocates for American rights during the conflict with Great Britain.
Alongside his wife, Mary Norris Dickinson, he is commemorated through various institutions, including Dickinson College, Penn State Dickinson Law, and the Dickinson Complex at the University of Delaware. In nineteen fifty-nine, John Dickinson High School in Wilmington was dedicated in his honor, further solidifying his legacy.
