John Evelyn

John Evelyn, born on 31 October 1620, was an eminent English writer, landowner, and horticulturist whose contributions to gardening and literature have left a lasting legacy. He is perhaps best known for his extensive diary, which chronicles his life from 1640 until his death in 1706. This remarkable work provides a unique glimpse into the social, political, and cultural landscape of his time, offering insights into significant events such as the execution of Charles I and the Great Fire of London in 1666.

A founding Fellow of the Royal Society, Evelyn's interests extended beyond mere gardening. His writings encompassed a wide array of subjects, including art and politics. However, as time progressed, he increasingly focused on horticulture, culminating in a substantial manuscript on the subject that remained unpublished until 2001. His influential work, Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees, published in 1664, urged landowners to plant trees, highlighting the alarming shortage of forests in England.

Although Evelyn's diary was published posthumously in eighteen eighteen, it has often been overshadowed by the more famous diary of Samuel Pepys, which, while covering a shorter period, delved into greater detail. Nevertheless, Evelyn's writings remain invaluable to historians, providing a rich narrative of a transformative era before the advent of regular newspapers and magazines.
