John Harnad

John Harnad, a distinguished mathematical physicist born in Hungary in nineteen forty-six, has made significant contributions to the fields of integrable systems, gauge theory, and random matrices. He completed his undergraduate studies at McGill University before earning his doctorate at the University of Oxford in nineteen seventy-two, under the mentorship of John C. Taylor.

Currently, Harnad serves as the Director of the Mathematical Physics group at the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) in Montreal, a prominent national research center in mathematics. Additionally, he holds a professorship in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Concordia University and is an affiliate member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. His academic journey also includes a long tenure as a visiting member at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.

Harnad's research has profoundly influenced various domains within mathematical physics, with his publications being widely cited across the field. His fundamental contributions encompass geometrical and topological methods in gauge theory, classical and quantum integrable systems, spectral theory of random matrices, isomonodromic deformations, the bispectral problem, integrable random processes, and transformation groups and symmetries.

In recognition of his impactful work, he was awarded the CAP-CRM Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics in two thousand six, honoring his deep and lasting contributions to the theory of integrable systems, particularly in relation to gauge theory, inverse scattering, and random matrices.
