John Henry Lake

John Henry Lake, born on July twenty-seventh, eighteen seventy-seven, was a prominent American racing cyclist who made his mark in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hailing from Port Richmond, Staten Island, Lake's passion for cycling led him to compete at the highest levels of the sport.

His most notable achievement came during the 1900 Summer Olympics held in Paris, where he showcased his exceptional talent in the men's 2 km sprint. Lake's performance earned him the equivalent of a modern bronze medal, a significant accomplishment given that the current medal format was not introduced until four years later.

In addition to his Olympic success, Lake also participated in the challenging 25 km race, although he did not finish. His innovative spirit was evident beyond racing; in nineteen hundred, he invented a machine that allowed him to ride his bike on a stand, which, with the assistance of a partner, could grind the blades of skates.
