John Hickenlooper

John Wright Hickenlooper Jr., born on February 7, 1952, in Narberth, Pennsylvania, is a prominent American politician, geologist, and businessman. He has been serving as the junior United States senator from Colorado since 2021, representing the Democratic Party. Hickenlooper's political journey began with his election as the 43rd mayor of Denver in 2003, where he served two successful terms and was recognized by TIME in 2005 as one of America's five best big-city mayors.

Before entering politics, Hickenlooper had a successful career as a petroleum geologist. In 1988, he co-founded the Wynkoop Brewing Company, which became one of the first brewpubs in the United States. His transition into public service was marked by his election as the 42nd governor of Colorado from 2011 to 2019, where he implemented significant reforms, including universal background checks and a ban on high-capacity magazines following the tragic Aurora shooting.

During his tenure as governor, Hickenlooper expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, significantly reducing the uninsured rate in Colorado. Initially opposed to marijuana legalization, he evolved his stance to support it over time. In 2019, he sought the Democratic nomination for U.S. president but withdrew before the primaries. He later ran for the U.S. Senate, winning both the Democratic nomination and the general election against incumbent Republican Cory Gardner.

At the age of sixty-eight, Hickenlooper made history as the oldest first-term senator to represent Colorado. His diverse background as a restaurateur, lawyer, and geologist has shaped his approach to governance and public policy, making him a unique figure in American politics.
