John Julius Norwich

John Julius Cooper, 2nd Viscount Norwich, was born on September fifteenth, nineteen twenty-nine, in London. He was the son of the notable Conservative politician and diplomat Duff Cooper and the actress Diana Manners. Following in his father's footsteps, Cooper joined the British Foreign Service in nineteen fifty-two, where he served in Yugoslavia and Lebanon, and participated in the British delegation to the Disarmament Conference in Geneva.

Upon the death of his father in nineteen fifty-four, he inherited the title of the second Viscount Norwich. However, in nineteen sixty-four, he made a significant career shift by leaving the diplomatic service to pursue writing. His literary contributions include acclaimed histories of Sicily under the Normans, Venice, the Byzantine Empire, the Mediterranean, and the Papacy, among others.

In addition to his writing, Norwich was a prominent television personality and radio host. He was known for his engaging presence on the BBC radio panel game My Word! from nineteen seventy-eight to nineteen eighty-two and participated as a regional contestant on Round Britain Quiz. His television work included the creation and presentation of approximately thirty documentaries, covering topics such as The Fall of Constantinople and The Antiquities of Turkey.

John Julius Norwich's legacy as a popular historian and writer is marked by his ability to bring history to life through his engaging narratives and documentaries. He passed away on June first, two thousand eighteen, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to educate and entertain.
