John Kerry

John Kerry, born on December 11, 1943, in Aurora, Colorado, is a distinguished American attorney, politician, and diplomat. He served as the 68th United States Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017 under President Barack Obama, following a notable career in the U.S. Senate where he represented Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Kerry was also the party's nominee for president in the 2004 election, where he faced incumbent George W. Bush.

Raised in a prominent family, Kerry's early life was spent in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. After graduating from Yale University in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve, achieving the rank of lieutenant. His service during the Vietnam War included a brief but impactful tour in South Vietnam, where he commanded a Swift Boat and sustained injuries that earned him three Purple Heart medals, along with the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals for his bravery.

Upon returning from military service, Kerry became a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War, gaining national attention as a spokesperson for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. His political career began in 1972 when he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, and after various roles, including serving as Massachusetts' lieutenant governor, he was elected to the Senate in 1984.

As Secretary of State, Kerry played a pivotal role in international diplomacy, initiating peace talks in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and negotiating the landmark nuclear agreement with Iran. He also signed the Paris Agreement on climate change in 2015. In 2021, he was appointed as the first U.S. special presidential envoy for climate under President Joe Biden, a role he held until March 2024, when he shifted focus to Biden's 2024 presidential campaign.

In recognition of his contributions, Kerry was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Biden in May 2024, solidifying his legacy as a dedicated public servant and advocate for peace and climate action.
