John Kricfalusi

Michael John Kricfalusi, known professionally as John K., is a prominent Canadian animator, voice actor, and blogger, born on September 9, 1955. He is best recognized as the creative force behind the groundbreaking animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show, which left an indelible mark on the landscape of televised animation during the 1990s. Kricfalusi's involvement in the show spanned from 1989 to 1992, where he played a pivotal role in its production and lent his voice to the iconic character Ren Höek, among others.

Born in Quebec, Kricfalusi's early years were spent in Germany and Belgium before he returned to Canada at the age of seven. His passion for animation ignited at a young age, as he honed his skills by replicating cartoons from newspapers and comic books, while also studying the production techniques of classic cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s. Influenced by the legendary Bob Clampett, he moved to Los Angeles in 1978, where he collaborated with notable figures such as Ralph Bakshi and contributed to various projects at Filmation, Hanna-Barbera, and DIC Entertainment.

In 1989, Kricfalusi co-founded the animation studio Spümcø, which became a significant part of his career until its closure in 2005. However, his journey took a turn when he was dismissed from Ren & Stimpy due to creative differences and production challenges. Despite this setback, he continued to innovate in the field, directing animated commercials and music videos for artists like Björk and Tenacious D. He also ventured into creating some of the first internet-exclusive cartoons, including The Goddamn George Liquor Program and Weekend Pussy Hunt.

After a brief return to television with The Ripping Friends and the adult-oriented Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon, Kricfalusi began a personal blog in 2006, where he shared insights on animation and art. It was here that he coined the term 'CalArts style,' which later became a point of contention in discussions about contemporary animation aesthetics. However, his career faced serious allegations in 2018 when he was accused of grooming and sexually abusing former Spümcø artists. Following these accusations, Kricfalusi issued an apology, attributing his actions to mental health struggles and poor impulse control, and subsequently withdrew from the animation industry.
