John M. Charlton

John M. Charlton, born on February third, eighteen twenty-nine in Garbuttsville, New York, was a prominent Canadian politician and businessman. The eldest son of Adam Charlton, who hailed from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, John received his early education at McLaren Grammar School in Caledonia, New York, before continuing at Springville Academy. His thirst for knowledge led him to study medicine, law, and public speaking, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors.

In eighteen forty-nine, at the age of twenty, Charlton relocated with his family to Ayr, Ontario, where he embraced the life of a farmer. His commitment to education was evident as he played a pivotal role in establishing a library in Ayr. By eighteen fifty-three, he had moved to Lynedoch, where he opened a general store in partnership with his uncle and future father-in-law, George Gray. In eighteen fifty-four, he married Ella Gray, further intertwining his personal and professional life.

Charlton's career took a significant turn in eighteen fifty-nine when he became the Canadian Manager for the lumber company Smith & Westover, based in Tonawanda, New York. His political journey began in eighteen seventy-one when he was elected as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, representing Norfolk North in the House of Commons for an impressive thirty-two years until nineteen hundred and four. Known for his strong religious convictions and advocacy for provincial rights, he was a vocal supporter of legislation aimed at protecting women and girls.

His speeches were characterized by a blunt and brusque style, setting him apart from his contemporaries. After a tour of the United States in eighteen ninety-seven, Charlton served on the Joint High Commission between Great Britain, Canada, and the United States from eighteen ninety-eight to eighteen ninety-nine. Following the death of his first wife, Ella, in nineteen hundred and five, he married Cora J. Owen in nineteen hundred and seven. John M. Charlton passed away from a stroke at his home in Lynedoch in nineteen ten, leaving behind a legacy of public service and dedication to his community.
