John McLean

John McLean, born on March eleventh, seventeen eighty-five, was a prominent American jurist and politician whose career spanned multiple branches of government. He began his journey in New Jersey, later moving to various frontier towns before establishing himself in Ridgeville, Ohio. There, he founded The Western Star, a weekly newspaper, and launched a successful law practice.

McLean's political career took off when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving from eighteen thirteen until he transitioned to the Ohio Supreme Court in eighteen sixteen. His legal acumen led him to resign from the court to join President James Monroe's administration as the U.S. Postmaster General in eighteen twenty-three, where he played a crucial role in expanding the United States Postal Service.

In eighteen twenty-nine, President Andrew Jackson appointed McLean as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. Throughout his tenure, he became known for his strong opposition to slavery, often being mentioned as a potential presidential candidate for various political parties. His dissenting opinions in landmark cases, such as Prigg v. Pennsylvania and Dred Scott v. Sandford, highlighted his commitment to justice and civil rights.

McLean's influence extended beyond the courtroom, as he garnered support from delegates at the Whig National Convention in eighteen forty-eight, the Republican National Convention in eighteen fifty-six, and again in eighteen sixty. He served on the Supreme Court until his death in eighteen sixty-one, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to public service and the rule of law.
