John McTiernan

John Campbell McTiernan Jr., born on January 8, 1951, is a prominent American film director, producer, and writer renowned for his significant contributions to the action film genre. His illustrious career boasts iconic films such as Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Last Action Hero (1993), and The Thomas Crown Affair and The 13th Warrior, both released in 1999.

Despite his success, McTiernan's career faced a severe setback in the mid-2000s when he unknowingly misled an FBI investigator, leading to legal troubles. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to this crime, and although the judgment was vacated, he later admitted guilt in 2007 to the original charge and an additional perjury charge. This stemmed from his engagement of private investigator Anthony Pellicano to illegally wiretap phone calls related to his film Rollerball (2002).

McTiernan's legal issues culminated in a federal prison sentence from April 2013 to February 2014. During this challenging period, he faced bankruptcy and foreclosure on his expansive ranch residence. His reputation in Hollywood suffered greatly, rendering him persona non grata, and he was not hired by any studio for feature film direction following his release.

In a surprising turn of events, McTiernan made a brief return to directing in 2017, creating two advertisements for the popular video game Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, marking a tentative step back into the industry that had once celebrated his cinematic achievements.
