John Michael Sherlock, born on January 20, 1926, in Regina, Saskatchewan, was a prominent figure in the Roman Catholic Church in Canada. Raised in Brantford, Ontario, he was the second eldest in a family of eight, with a strong familial connection to the priesthood; four of his five brothers pursued seminary studies, and two, Fr. William and Fr. Philip Sherlock, were ordained as priests.
Ordained in 1950, Sherlock dedicated his life to serving the Church and its community. His leadership journey culminated in his appointment as the Bishop of London, Ontario, on July 8, 1978. Overseeing a diocese that encompassed more than one hundred thirty parishes and served approximately four hundred forty thousand parishioners, he played a crucial role in the spiritual guidance of many.
However, Sherlock's tenure was not without challenges. His time as bishop was marked by significant clergy sexual abuse scandals, which brought to light the troubling history of such issues within the Diocese of London. These events cast a long shadow over his leadership and highlighted the need for reform and accountability within the Church.
