John of Capistrano

John of Capistrano, born on June twenty-fourth, thirteen eighty-six, was an influential Italian Franciscan friar and Catholic priest hailing from the picturesque town of Capestrano in Abruzzo. Renowned for his fervent preaching and theological insights, he became a prominent figure in the religious landscape of his time.

His legacy is particularly marked by his role as an inquisitor, where he earned a reputation for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. However, it was during the siege of Belgrade in fourteen fifty-six that he truly distinguished himself, leading a Crusade against the encroaching Ottoman Empire alongside the Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi at the remarkable age of seventy.

John's valor and dedication in this pivotal moment earned him the affectionate title of 'the Soldier Saint.' His contributions to both the church and society were recognized when he was elevated to sainthood, and he became the patron saint of jurists and military chaplains.

In addition to his spiritual and military achievements, John of Capistrano is honored as the namesake of two significant Franciscan missions located in Southern California and San Antonio, Texas, further solidifying his enduring impact on the Catholic Church and its outreach efforts.
