Podesta's political career includes a notable tenure as White House Chief of Staff under President Bill Clinton from 1998 to 2001, and as Counselor to President Barack Obama from 2014 to 2015. His earlier roles in the Clinton administration included serving as White House Staff Secretary from 1993 to 1995 and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations from 1997 to 1998.

In addition to his government service, Podesta is the former president and current chair and counselor of the Center for American Progress, a leading think tank in Washington, D.C. He has also held an academic position as a visiting professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center.
