John Polanyi

John Polanyi, a distinguished chemist and physicist, was born on January twenty-third, nineteen twenty-nine, in Berlin, Germany. He hails from the notable Hungarian Polányi family and emigrated to the United Kingdom in nineteen thirty-three. His academic journey began at the University of Manchester, where he earned his Ph.D. in nineteen fifty-two, followed by postdoctoral research at the National Research Council in Canada and Princeton University.

In nineteen fifty-six, Polanyi joined the University of Toronto as his first academic appointment, where he has continued to contribute to the field of chemistry as a Professor Emeritus/Emerita. His groundbreaking research in chemical kinetics earned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in Chemistry in nineteen eighty-six, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

Beyond the Nobel Prize, Polanyi's accolades include thirty-three honorary degrees, the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, and the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.
