John Robert Nicholson

John Robert Nicholson, born on December first, nineteen oh one, was a distinguished Canadian lawyer and politician who made significant contributions to the province of British Columbia. Originally hailing from Newcastle, New Brunswick, now known as Miramichi, he pursued his legal education at Dalhousie University in Halifax, graduating from its law school.

In nineteen twenty-four, Nicholson relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he began his legal practice. His career took a notable turn during World War II when he served as a deputy controller in the Department of Munitions and Supplies. Following the war, he held prominent positions, including the head of Polymer Corporation from nineteen forty-two to nineteen fifty-one and later leading the Brazilian Light and Power Company in Rio de Janeiro from nineteen fifty-two to nineteen fifty-six.

In nineteen sixty-two, Nicholson entered the political arena, being elected to the Canadian House of Commons for the riding of Vancouver Centre. He was re-elected in nineteen sixty-three and nineteen sixty-five, during which he held various ministerial roles, including Minister of Forestry, Postmaster General, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and Minister of Labour.

His political career culminated in his appointment as the twenty-first Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, a position he held from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen seventy-three. Nicholson's legacy is marked by his dedication to public service and his impactful leadership in both legal and political spheres.
