He is best known for his iconic work on 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and for co-creating beloved characters such as Mary Jane Watson, the Punisher, Kingpin, Wolverine, and Luke Cage. His artistic legacy is further enriched by his familial ties, being the father of fellow comic book artist John Romita Jr. and the husband of Virginia Romita, who played a pivotal role as Marvel's traffic manager for many years.

Romita's journey in the comic book industry began in nineteen forty-nine when he worked as a ghost artist for Timely Comics, the precursor to Marvel. It was during this time that he met Stan Lee, the editor-in-chief who would later become a key figure in his career. By nineteen fifty-one, Romita was drawing horror, war, and romance comics for Atlas Comics, and he made his first foray into superhero art with a revival of Captain America in the nineteen fifties.

From nineteen fifty-eight to nineteen sixty-five, Romita exclusively worked for DC Comics, where he became the artist for numerous romance comics. This period was crucial for his artistic development, particularly in his ability to depict beautiful women, a skill that would define his later work. In nineteen sixty-five, he made the transition to Marvel, initially illustrating Daredevil comics.

Romita's career took a significant turn in nineteen sixty-six when he was selected by Stan Lee to take over as the artist for 'The Amazing Spider-Man' following the departure of co-creator Steve Ditko.
