John Sedgwick

John Sedgwick, born on September thirteenth, eighteen thirteen, was a distinguished American military officer who rose to prominence as a Union Army general during the tumultuous years of the American Civil War.

His military career was marked by notable engagements, including the Battle of Antietam, where he was wounded three times while leading his division in a challenging assault against Confederate forces. This injury prevented him from participating in the subsequent Battle of Fredericksburg.

Under Sedgwick's command, the VI Corps played a pivotal role in the Chancellorsville Campaign, engaging Confederate troops at both the Second Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Salem Church. However, his corps arrived late at the Battle of Gettysburg, resulting in limited action during this significant conflict.

Tragically, Sedgwick's life was cut short when he was killed by a sharpshooter at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May ninth, eighteen sixty-four. His death marked him as one of the highest-ranking Union officers to fall in the war, alongside notable figures such as Major Generals James B. McPherson, Joseph K. Mansfield, and John F. Reynolds. He is often remembered for his ironic last words: 'They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance.'
