John Stith Pemberton

John Stith Pemberton, born on July 8, 1831, was a notable American pharmacist and chemist whose legacy is forever intertwined with the invention of Coca-Cola. His journey began in the pharmaceutical industry, where he honed his skills and knowledge, ultimately leading to a groundbreaking creation that would change the beverage landscape.

On May 8, 1886, Pemberton developed an early version of what would later be known as Coca-Cola. This innovative beverage was a culmination of his experiments with various painkillers and toxins, driven by his personal struggles with chronic pain stemming from a sabre wound he sustained during the Battle of Columbus in April 1865. His quest for relief from pain led him down a path of morphine addiction, which further fueled his desire to create a remedy.

Despite his significant contributions, Pemberton sold the rights to his invention to Asa Griggs Candler for approximately two thousand three hundred dollars shortly before his death in 1888. This decision would ultimately pave the way for Coca-Cola to become one of the most recognized brands in the world, overshadowing Pemberton's own struggles and achievements.
