John T. Zimmer

John T. Zimmer, born on February twenty-eighth, eighteen eighty-nine, was a prominent American ornithologist whose passion for the natural world led him to explore various scientific fields, including entomology and zoology. A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Zimmer's career took flight in nineteen thirteen when he began working as an agricultural adviser in the Philippines and later in New Guinea. During this time, he amassed significant collections of bird specimens that would contribute greatly to the field of ornithology.

Upon returning to the United States, Zimmer joined the esteemed Field Museum of Natural History, where he played a pivotal role in compiling a Catalog of the Ayer Ornithological Library. His adventurous spirit led him on expeditions to Africa and Peru, further enriching his knowledge and collections of avian species.

In nineteen thirty, he was recruited by Frank Chapman to serve as the Associate Curator of Birds at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, a position he held for the remainder of his life. Zimmer's meticulous work included systematic revisions of the taxonomy of birds from Peru and their relatives across South America. In his later years, he focused on New World flycatchers, contributing to Peter's Check-list of Birds of the World with his research on the Tyrannidae family.

A respected figure in the ornithological community, Zimmer was a Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union and served as the editor of its journal, The Auk, from nineteen forty-two to nineteen forty-eight. His legacy endures, commemorated in the names of several species, including Zimmer's tapaculo, Scytalopus zimmeri.
