John Tavener, born on January twenty-eighth, nineteen forty-four, was a distinguished English composer renowned for his choral religious works. His musical journey began with the cantata The Whale, which premiered in nineteen sixty-eight, earning him immediate acclaim. At just twenty-four years old, he was hailed by The Guardian as 'the musical discovery of the year,' while The Times recognized him as 'among the very best creative talents of his generation.'

Throughout his illustrious career, Tavener became one of the most celebrated composers of his time, particularly noted for his works The Protecting Veil and Song for Athene. The Protecting Veil, recorded by the acclaimed cellist Steven Isserlis, achieved remarkable commercial success, while Song for Athene gained international recognition when it was performed at the funeral of Princess Diana. Additionally, his piece The Lamb was featured in the soundtrack of Paolo Sorrentino's film The Great Beauty.

In a significant moment of his career, Tavener composed A New Beginning to mark the Millennium celebrations on New Year's Eve, nineteen ninety-nine, during the opening of the Millennium Dome in London.
