John Tory

John Tory, born on May twenty-eight, nineteen fifty-four, is a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician who made significant contributions to the city of Toronto. He served as the sixty-fifth mayor of Toronto from two thousand fourteen until two thousand twenty-three, showcasing his leadership during a transformative period for the city. Before his tenure as mayor, Tory was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario from two thousand four to two thousand nine, and he held the position of Leader of the Official Opposition from two thousand five to two thousand seven.

His political journey began with a bid for mayor in the two thousand three municipal election, where he faced off against David Miller. Although he did not win, Tory's political career continued to flourish as he became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing Dufferin—Peel—Wellington—Grey. After stepping down as PC leader in two thousand nine, he transitioned to a successful career as a radio talk show host on CFRB, while also serving as the volunteer chair of CivicAction from two thousand ten to two thousand fourteen.

Tory's election as mayor in October two thousand fourteen marked a significant milestone, as he defeated Doug Ford, the brother of the former mayor Rob Ford, and Olivia Chow. He was re-elected in October two thousand eighteen, triumphing over former chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat, and secured a third term in October two thousand twenty-two against urbanist Gil Penalosa. However, his time in office came to an abrupt end when he announced his resignation on February ten, two thousand twenty-three, following the revelation of an affair with a staff member during the COVID-19 pandemic. He officially left office on February seventeen, two thousand twenty-three, and was succeeded by Olivia Chow.
