John Turner

John Turner, born on June seventh, nineteen twenty-nine, was a prominent Canadian politician, lawyer, and athletics competitor. He made history as the seventeenth prime minister of Canada, serving a brief term from June to September nineteen eighty-four. Turner was a key figure in the Liberal Party, leading as both the party leader and the leader of the Opposition from nineteen eighty-four to nineteen ninety.

Before entering politics, Turner practiced law and was elected as a member of Parliament in the nineteen sixty-two federal election. His political career flourished under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, where he held significant cabinet positions, including minister of justice and attorney general from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen seventy-two, and minister of finance from nineteen seventy-two to nineteen seventy-five. Known for his affiliation with the Business Liberal faction, Turner resigned in nineteen seventy-five amid a challenging global recession.

After a hiatus from politics, during which he worked as a corporate lawyer on Bay Street, Turner returned to the political arena following Trudeau's resignation in nineteen eighty-four. He won the leadership election and became prime minister, although he was not an MP or senator at the time—a rare occurrence in Canadian history. His tenure as prime minister lasted only seventy-nine days, as he advised the governor general to dissolve Parliament shortly after taking office. Turner faced a significant defeat in the subsequent election against Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservatives, marking one of the worst losses for a governing party in Canada.

Reentering Parliament as the member for Vancouver Quadra, Turner continued to lead the Liberal Party and the Opposition for six more years. He actively campaigned against Mulroney's proposed free trade agreement with the United States during the nineteen eighty-eight election, which helped the Liberals achieve a modest recovery. Ultimately, Turner resigned as party leader in nineteen ninety and chose not to seek re-election in nineteen ninety-three. He was notable for being Canada's first prime minister born in the United Kingdom since Mackenzie Bowell in eighteen ninety-six and lived to the remarkable age of ninety-one, making him one of Canada's longest-lived prime ministers.
