John Van Seters

John Van Seters, born on May second, nineteen thirty-five, was a distinguished Canadian scholar renowned for his expertise in the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East. He held the esteemed position of University Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina, where he also served as the James A. Gray Professor of Biblical Literature.

Van Seters completed his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies at Yale University in nineteen sixty-five and was later honored with a Th.D. h.c. from the University of Lausanne in nineteen ninety-nine. His academic journey was marked by numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an NEH fellowship, and an ACLS Fellowship, alongside research fellowships at prestigious institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Throughout his career, he authored several influential publications that contributed significantly to biblical scholarship. Notable works include 'The Hyksos: A New Investigation' published in nineteen sixty-six, 'Abraham in History and Tradition' from nineteen seventy-five, and 'In Search of History' released in nineteen eighty-three, for which he received the James H. Breasted Prize and the American Academy of Religion book award. His later works, 'The Edited Bible' in two thousand six and 'The Biblical Saga of King David' in two thousand nine, further solidified his reputation in the field.

John Van Seters passed away in Waterloo, Ontario, on April ninth, twenty twenty-five, at the age of eighty-nine, leaving behind a legacy of scholarly contributions that continue to influence the study of biblical literature.
