John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester, born on April first, sixteen forty-seven, was a prominent English poet and a notable figure in the court of King Charles II during the Restoration period. His life was marked by a spirited rebellion against the strictures of the preceding Puritan era, which he viewed as spiritually authoritarian. Rochester's lifestyle was as rakish as his poetry, with both elements often intertwined in his public persona.

Rochester's literary prowess earned him the title of 'the best English satirist' from his contemporary Andrew Marvell. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant poets and learned individuals among the Restoration wits. His works, particularly 'A Satyr Against Reason and Mankind,' gained considerable acclaim during his lifetime and continue to be celebrated today.

Despite facing censorship during the Victorian era, Rochester's poetry experienced a revival beginning in the nineteen twenties, with notable literary figures such as Graham Greene and Ezra Pound reappraising his contributions.
