John Young Brown Jr. was a prominent American politician and entrepreneur born on December 28, 1933, in Kentucky. He was the son of United States Representative John Y. Brown Sr. and displayed a remarkable talent for business from a young age, notably making a significant profit selling Encyclopædia Britannica sets during his college years. After a brief stint practicing law alongside his father, Brown made a pivotal move in 1964 by purchasing Kentucky Fried Chicken from its founder, Harland Sanders. Under his leadership, KFC transformed into a multimillion-dollar global restaurant chain, and he sold his stake in the company for a substantial profit in 1971.
In the 1970s, Brown ventured into professional sports, owning three basketball teams: the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association, and the Boston Celtics and Buffalo Braves of the National Basketball Association. Despite his successful business career, he surprised many by entering the political arena, declaring his candidacy for governor in the 1979 election. With the state grappling with economic challenges, Brown campaigned on the promise of running the government like a business, leveraging his personal wealth to fund a strong media campaign that led to his victory in the Democratic primary and subsequent general election against former Republican governor Louie B. Nunn.
As the 55th governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983, Brown took an unconventional approach by appointing successful businesspeople to key state positions rather than traditional political figures. He made strides toward diversity in his cabinet, appointing both a woman and an African American. However, his tenure was marked by a hands-off style, often leaving Lieutenant Governor Martha Layne Collins to act in his stead for significant portions of his term. After his governorship, he briefly sought a U.S. Senate seat in 1984 but withdrew due to health concerns.
Brown continued to explore business opportunities, most notably founding Kenny Rogers Roasters in partnership with country music star Kenny Rogers. His personal life included three marriages, the second to former Miss America Phyllis George, and he was the father of several children, including news anchor Pamela Ashley Brown and former Secretary of State of Kentucky John Young Brown III.
