Johnny Hodges

Johnny Hodges, born on July twenty-fifth, nineteen oh six, was a prominent American alto saxophonist and songwriter, celebrated for his exceptional solo work with Duke Ellington's big band. His mastery of the alto saxophone made him one of the defining voices of the big band era, and he played lead alto in the saxophone section for many years. Although he occasionally showcased his talent on the soprano saxophone, he chose to abandon it after nineteen forty.

Hodges began his musical journey as a teenager in Boston, where he honed his skills before venturing to New York City. There, he collaborated with notable musicians such as Lloyd Scott, Sidney Bechet, Luckey Roberts, and Chick Webb. His big break came in nineteen twenty-eight when Duke Ellington sought to expand his band. Recommended by clarinet player Barney Bigard, Hodges joined the orchestra, where his distinctive sound became integral to its identity.

From nineteen fifty-one to nineteen fifty-five, Hodges took a hiatus from Ellington to lead his own band, showcasing his leadership and creativity. However, he returned to the Duke's ensemble just in time for the orchestra's remarkable performance at the nineteen fifty-six Newport Jazz Festival, marking a significant moment in Ellington's resurgence.
