Johns Hopkins, born on May nineteenth, seventeen ninety-five, was a prominent American merchant and philanthropist whose legacy is deeply intertwined with the establishment of two major institutions: Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. His financial contributions to these entities marked a significant moment in American philanthropy, as his donation was the largest ever made to an educational institution in the United States at the time of his passing.

Raised on a plantation in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Hopkins embarked on his professional journey at the tender age of seventeen. He moved to Baltimore, where he spent the majority of his life and built his wealth primarily through strategic investments in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, eventually serving as its finance director. Additionally, he held the position of president at the Merchants' National Bank in Baltimore, further solidifying his influence in the region.

A member of the Quaker faith, Hopkins was a staunch supporter of Abraham Lincoln and the Union during the tumultuous years of the American Civil War. His political views were characterized by a strong opposition to slavery, although recent research has sparked debate regarding his early life and potential connections to the institution of slavery. While some scholars have suggested he may have owned or employed enslaved individuals, others emphasize his documented efforts to support Black education and social welfare.
