Joi Ito

Joi Ito, born on June nineteenth, nineteen sixty-six, is a prominent Japanese entrepreneur and venture capitalist known for his significant contributions to the fields of Internet and technology. He currently serves as the president of the Chiba Institute of Technology and holds a position on the board of directors for the Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan, where he also chairs the Gelephu Investment Development Corporation.

Throughout his career, Ito has been recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit, founding notable companies such as PSINet Japan, Infoseek Japan, and Digital Garage, where he serves as chief architect and board member. He is also the founder and managing partner of Neoteny and GMJP, an early-stage fund that invests in web3 initiatives in Japan.

His influence extends to academia, having held positions as a former director of the MIT Media Lab and a professor of the practice of media arts and sciences at MIT. Additionally, he has been a visiting professor of practice at Harvard Law School. Ito's extensive board memberships include organizations such as Creative Commons, The Electronic Privacy Information Center, and The Mozilla Foundation.

In September two thousand nineteen, Ito faced scrutiny due to his financial ties to Jeffrey Epstein, leading to his resignation from various prestigious roles, including those at MIT and Harvard. As of March two thousand twenty-six, following renewed attention from the U.S. Justice Department's release of Epstein-related documents, Ito announced his intention to resign from the Digital Society Initiative and retire from his executive and board positions at Digital Garage.
