Jon Avnet

Jon Avnet, born on November seventeenth, nineteen forty-nine, is a distinguished American film director, writer, and producer. Hailing from Brooklyn, he is the son of Joan Bertha Grossman and Lester Francis Avnet, a corporate executive associated with Avnet, a global distributor of IT and electronics founded by his grandfather, Charles Avnet. Jon grew up with two siblings, Carole Avnet Rocherolle and Rosalind Avnet Lazarus, and attended Great Neck North High School in Great Neck, New York.

Avnet's academic journey led him to the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he began his studies before ultimately earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in film and theater arts from Sarah Lawrence College in nineteen seventy-one. His Jewish heritage has played a role in shaping his perspectives and storytelling throughout his career.

In nineteen ninety-seven, Avnet tackled significant political themes with his fourth film, Red Corner, which delves into the complexities of the Chinese legal system. The film, featuring Richard Gere and Bai Ling, faced challenges in filming due to Gere's advocacy for Tibet and the Dalai Lama, resulting in production primarily in Southern California, with select scenes shot in Beijing that included real footage of Chinese executions.
