His journey in professional hockey began in the American Hockey League (AHL) in two thousand eleven, where he showcased his skills despite being regarded as an undersized player.

After going undrafted, Marchessault signed his first NHL contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in two thousand twelve. However, he primarily played with their AHL affiliates before making a significant impact in the NHL during the twenty fifteen to twenty sixteen season with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
