Jonathan Schaeffer

Jonathan Schaeffer, born in nineteen fifty-seven, is a distinguished Canadian computer scientist and a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence. As a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta, he has made significant contributions to AI research, particularly in game theory and strategic decision-making.

One of Schaeffer's most notable achievements is leading the development of Chinook, the world's strongest American checkers player. His expertise in programming also extends to computer chess, where he initially garnered attention for his successful projects. Currently, he is actively involved with the University of Alberta GAMES group, focusing on the development of advanced computer poker systems.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Schaeffer is a key member of the research team behind Polaris, a sophisticated program designed to play Texas Hold'em poker. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident in his founding of Onlea, which specializes in creating engaging online learning experiences, as well as Synsira Software Solutions, Inc., a company dedicated to developing desktop software for private AI analysis.
