Jorge Ibargüengoitia

Jorge Ibargüengoitia, born on January 22, 1928, in Guanajuato, Mexico, was a prominent writer and playwright whose works have left an indelible mark on Latin American literature. Renowned for his sharp satires, he gained both popular and critical acclaim, with notable English translations of his novels such as The Dead Girls, Two Crimes, and The Lightning of August.

In addition to his novels, Ibargüengoitia's contributions to the theatrical world include plays like Susana y los Jóvenes and Ante varias esfinges, both crafted during the vibrant 1950s. His literary repertoire also encompasses a variety of short stories and chronicles, showcasing his versatility and depth as a writer.

His journey in literature was further enriched by a Rockefeller grant in 1955, which allowed him to study in New York City. Five years later, he was honored with the Mexico City literary award, solidifying his status as a significant figure in the literary community.

Tragically, Ibargüengoitia's life was cut short when he perished in the crash of Avianca Flight 011 on November 27, 1983, while attempting to land in Madrid, Spain. His legacy, however, continues to resonate through his influential works.
