Jorge Rafael Videla

Jorge Rafael Videla, born on August 2, 1925, was an Argentine military officer who rose to infamy as a dictator and the President of Argentina from 1976 to 1981. His regime, known as the National Reorganization Process, was marked by severe human rights violations during a tumultuous period in Latin America, particularly during the Cold War.

Videla came to power through a coup d'état that ousted Isabel Perón. His rule was characterized by widespread abductions, torture, and executions of political dissidents, with estimates suggesting that between thirteen thousand and thirty thousand individuals vanished during this dark chapter in Argentine history. The regime also engaged in the systematic kidnapping of children from female prisoners, a horrific practice that left lasting scars on the nation.

In 1985, following the restoration of democracy, Videla faced justice in the Trial of the Juntas, where he was prosecuted for his role in the extensive human rights abuses committed under his command. He was convicted of crimes against humanity, including the abduction and murder of activists and their families in clandestine detention centers. Videla's actions included the theft of babies born to detainees, who were then illegally adopted by regime associates.

After spending years under house arrest, Videla was transferred to a military prison in October 2008. In July 2010, he publicly accepted responsibility for the actions of his army during his rule. Subsequent trials led to a life sentence in December 2010 for the deaths of thirty-one prisoners and an additional fifty-year sentence in July 2012 for the systematic kidnapping of children. Videla passed away in the Marcos Paz civilian prison in 2013, shortly after suffering a fall.
