Josaphat Kuntsevych

Josaphat Kuntsevych, born in 1580, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, serving as a Basilian hieromonk and later as the archeparch of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. His tenure as Archbishop of Polotsk from 1618 to 1623 was marked by his unwavering commitment to the Eastern Catholic Churches, a commitment that would ultimately lead to his martyrdom.

On 12 November 1623, Josaphat met a tragic end when he was brutally beaten to death with an axe during an anti-Catholic riot in Vitebsk, a reflection of the intense conflict between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches. This violence was exacerbated by the historical context of the 1596 Union of Brest, which saw several bishops shift their allegiance from the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople to the Holy See.

Despite the hostility he faced, Josaphat's legacy as a champion of the Catholic faith endures. He was canonized in 1867 by Pope Pius IX, recognized as a saint and martyr for his efforts in promoting Catholicism in the region. His biographer, Fr. Demetrius Wysochansky, noted that Josaphat's pastoral work was instrumental in nurturing the Catholic community in Polotsk and beyond, earning him the nickname 'The Soul-Snatcher' from both his Orthodox and Calvinist adversaries.

Josaphat's influence is still felt today, as many Catholics in Lithuania and Byelorussia trace their faith back to his dedicated service and sacrifice. His life and death serve as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by the Eastern Catholic Churches during a tumultuous period in history.
