José Antonio Primo de Rivera

José Antonio Primo de Rivera y Sáenz de Heredia, born on April twenty-fourth, nineteen oh three, was a prominent Spanish national syndicalist politician and the founder of the Falange Española, a political party that sought to unify various nationalist sentiments in Spain. He was the eldest son of General Miguel Primo de Rivera, who ruled Spain as a dictator from nineteen twenty-three to nineteen thirty. José Antonio's early career as a lawyer spanned from nineteen twenty-seven to nineteen thirty-three, during which he became increasingly involved in politics.

Initially, he joined the National Monarchist Union to honor his father's legacy, but soon grew disillusioned with traditional monarchist policies. This led him to co-found the Movimiento Español Sindicalista with Julio Ruiz de Alda, a precursor to his more influential creation, the Falange Española, established in October nineteen thirty-three. His political ambitions culminated in a successful bid for a seat in the Congress of Deputies during the general election of that same year, where he positioned himself as a messianic leader dedicated to rescuing Spain through national syndicalism.

In nineteen thirty-six, as tensions escalated in Spain, José Antonio endorsed the nationalist military coup against the Second Spanish Republic, which ignited a civil war. However, he was imprisoned before the conflict fully erupted, facing charges of conspiracy and military rebellion. Tragically, he was executed by firing squad during the early months of the war, marking a premature end to his political journey.

Throughout his life, he held the title of the third Marquis of Estella and was posthumously honored in nineteen forty-eight with the title of Duke of Primo de Rivera, which was later inherited by his brother Miguel. His legacy was further solidified during the Spanish Civil War, where he was venerated by the Nationalist faction and later utilized as a martyr figure in Francoist propaganda, with the phrase 'José Antonio ¡Presente!' echoing in churches across Spain.
