José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia

José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, born on January sixth, seventeen sixty-six, was a prominent lawyer and politician who played a pivotal role in the early history of Paraguay. Known as Doctor Francia, he earned the title of Karai Guasu, meaning 'Great Lord' in Guaraní, reflecting his significant influence and authority in the region.

Following Paraguay's independence from the Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in eighteen eleven, Francia emerged as the first dictator of the nation, serving from eighteen fourteen until his death in eighteen forty. His official designation was 'Supreme and Perpetual Dictator of Paraguay,' but he was more commonly referred to as El Supremo by the people.

Francia was a staunch advocate for Paraguay's complete independence, opposing both the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and the Empire of Brazil. Under his leadership, he implemented policies that isolated Paraguay from the external world, shaping the nation’s identity and governance during a critical period of its development.
