Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of José López Portillo

José López Portillo, born on June sixteenth, nineteen twenty, was a prominent Mexican politician, lawyer, university teacher, and writer. He served as the fifty-eighth president of Mexico from nineteen seventy-six to nineteen eighty-two, making history as the only official candidate in the nineteen seventy-six presidential election, winning unopposed.

During his presidency, López Portillo initiated a process of political openness, marked by the electoral reform of nineteen seventy-seven. This reform allowed for the registration of political parties, enabling dissidents from the left to legally engage in national politics and granting amnesty to many guerrilla fighters from the Dirty War. His administration also focused on economic nationalism, heavily investing in the national oil industry following the discovery of new oil reserves, which initially spurred economic growth.

However, the latter part of his presidency was overshadowed by a severe debt crisis triggered by falling international oil prices in the summer of nineteen eighty-one. This crisis led Mexico to declare a sovereign default in nineteen eighty-two, resulting in widespread capital flight and prompting López Portillo to nationalize the banks just three months before leaving office. By the end of his term, Mexico had the highest external debt in the world, and his presidency was marred by allegations of government corruption and nepotism.

After leaving office, many officials from his administration faced prosecution for corruption during the presidency of his successor, Miguel de la Madrid. Although López Portillo himself was suspected of involvement in corrupt activities, he was never formally charged. It was later revealed that he had collaborated with the CIA prior to his presidency.

José López Portillo passed away on February seventeenth, two thousand four, due to complications from pneumonia at his home in Mexico City, at the age of eighty-three. He was laid to rest at the Mexico City Military Cemetery.
